In Luke 6:40, the Lord tells us something critical to the project of education:

“A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.”

Hugh of St. Victor agreed, likening the relationship of a student and his teacher to a seal and soft wax. Just as the image on the seal is engraved on the wax’s surface in their contact, so the image of the teacher is impressed on the student in the classroom.

Education replicates people more than it imparts mere data, so we take great care in choosing whom we will employ to teach and shepherd the students entrusted to our care.
